The New Stone Age

We’re heading into the Stone Age in the modern kitchen – and there’s nothing old fashioned about it. I’m talking about natural stone countertops. Granite, of course, has been popular in the kitchen for years, but now a quarry full of other natural stones is finding a home in the kitchen, too. Marble, with its beautiful veining and swirls, gives a kitchen a rich, classic look. Read more…

Granite Planet

No room forms the rock solid heart of a home like a kitchen. And more of the counter tops in today’s kitchens are rock solid, too. A growing variety of natural stone is available for use in countertops: limestone, marble, slate, soapstone and more. But among all of those beautiful natural stones, the most popular and dramatic choice in stone is granite. With its wide range of colors, beautiful patterns and its sheer durability, it’s no wonder granite is found in so many new kitchens, even as the number of natural stone choices has grown. Read more…

It’s not just for roofs and floors anymore! Slate, that dark, familiar stone, is one of many natural stones that have found their way into kitchens – specifically, kitchen countertops – recently. Geologically, slate is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of clay and volcanic ash that has metamorphosed in layers. The appearance of these stone can vary markedly depending on the origin, but generally they are very muted and have greenish to reddish gray.. Slate is a real contrast to the splashy and vibrant granites and marbles that are very popular in kitchens. Read more…

Put the Lime in the Countertop…

Saturday, March 13th, 2010 | Filed under: Natural Stone Countertop

These days a geologist could do field work in the contemporary American kitchen. Natural stone countertops are one of the top trends in kitchen design today. Of course, granite is still popular , but now we’re seeing lesser known natural stone like soapstone and slate in the kitchen. One of my favorites is limestone. It’s a sedimentary rock composed mostly of the mineral calcite. Unlike marble, which arises from the transformation of this stone under enormous heat and pressure, limestone has little veining or swirls. Limestone kitchen counter tops present a sophisticated and understated look. Read more…
