Installing a Kitchen Backsplash

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011 | Filed under: Modern kitchens, contemporary kitchen, kitchen remodeling

Installing a kitchen backsplash is one of the easiest ways to stylize your kitchen and to add value to your home. Backsplashes, for those of you who do not know, are basically a cover for your kitchen wall that serves to keep the wall clean and dry. Backsplashes also enable you to personalize your kitchen.

A new backsplash is a great way to add some life into your boring kitchen. All that it takes is some creativity and imagination. Thankfully there are also a lot of materials out there to help you ignite that creative spark.

Here are some of the possibilities out there for you to consider.

Tiles: The most common backsplash that you will see is made of tiles. Tiles are a great material to use in a kitchen backsplash because they are so easy to clean. Plus tiles come in so many different designs and patterns which allows you to come up with a highly creative theme to match any kitchen.

However, tile backsplashes have to be installed the right way. Since they will be exposed to frequent heat and moisture, one must take care to properly measure out the design to make sure it stays in alignment. To set the tiles, I suggest using a tile adhesive to keep them in place and to make the job look professional.

Laminate: Laminate, like tiles, is a great material for backsplashes because it enables you to get creative and experiment. Laminate can literally have any digital design you want printed onto it with vibrant colors. Think of all of the possibilities.

Stamped Metal: This material is good because it is affordable and easy to cut. Using stamped metal will give your kitchen a modern industrial look but it will also require a lot more upkeep to keep the backsplash looking nice.

Faux Stone: If you would like to have a classic country look to your kitchen then faux stone is the material of choice. Faux stone looks just like real rocks, but it is soft enough to pin notes into. Faux stone also repels moisture which makes it durable and easy to clean.

Textured Wallpaper: This backsplash idea is an easy and great option that will allow you to play with your creativity again. Installation is easy and only requires trimming of the paper. Once the wallpaper is in place, you can cover it with a nice layer of semi-gloss paint to make it last longer and help it stay clean.

No matter what idea you choose to go with, just remember to use your creativity and have fun with this easy kitchen remodeling project.

Kitchen Remodeling Options – Choosing Appliances

Sunday, December 5th, 2010 | Filed under: Classic Kitchens, beautiful kitchen, kitchen remodeling

When remodeling your kitchen and updating your appliances you may come to a halt when picking a new oven, because you may have to decide which is best for your home, the gas or electric oven. Some argue that gas is best because when cooking stovetop a simmer cooks just right and a dish perfectly sautéed is often attributed to the precision that comes from a gas stove. A baker may tell you differently, the gas oven may cause a baker’s delight to not cook evenly as an electric oven would bake a yummy dessert or fresh bread to perfection.

There are many debates as to why gas ovens are better, besides what a gas oven does for you food cooking on the stovetop. You will save money; gas is less expensive then electric rates. Also, come a power outage, having a gas oven would be ideal. You can still cook for your family even though the power is out. The benefits could be quite a long list as the cons being very short, gas ovens can be dangerous given a gas leak or the baker complaining of a dish that went wrong is mostly what you’ll hear.

Back and forth, who is right? It doesn’t matter anymore. What about having the best of both worlds in one oven? In today’s market you can have just that, dual fuel ranges, a gas stovetop and an electric oven with all the bells and whistles you would get from both, the gas or electric oven. Power out, you still can cook stovetop. Having gas problems you can still bake. Having both gas and electric in one oven will still help save some considerable dollars come time for your bill. Having this option on top of all the other options available, this is great for both the cook and the baker.

What type of oven would you prefer for your modern kitchen?

Types of Kitchen Counter Tops

Remodeling your kitchen countertops and deciding on which types of materials you will use for the final results can be time consuming. Knowing what the different countertop types are and what their pros and cons are will help you come to a decision in the materials to use to achieve a beautiful look throughout your kitchen.

A popular favorite is granite kitchen countertop. Granite is tough and durable. Granite comes in many colors and will last a lifetime. Granite is also resistance to high heat. Granite being a natural porosity, makes it susceptible to staining if anything oily or acidic spills on it. Besides the staining factor, granite can be expensive, requires some maintenance, and can crack if stressed or improperly installed.
As for stainless steel counters, this choice gives a contemporary look and feel for your kitchen. These countertops are heat resistant and durable. Stainless steel can handle hot pans and is very easy to clean. The drawbacks of stainless steel are that they can be expensive, noisy, may dent, and you can’t cut on them.

Quartz kitchen countertops are a very popular choice. Quartz can withstand high pressures and temperatures without any damage. Quartz is very smooth and very strong like that of marble or granite. Since Quartz is less porous than marble and granite, there is less of a chance of stains or damage.
Concrete kitchen countertops are an excellent choice when remodeling your kitchen. With different choices in aggregate and stains, a concrete kitchen countertop can appear more expensive than it really is. Many people may think your countertops are granite or marble if done right. Concrete is heat and scratch resistant, can be tinted in many color choices, and can be decorative. Concrete can be costly due to customization, and cracking is very possible.

Whatever it is you choose for your modern kitchen be sure to speak to a professional if you’re not too sure on what materials are best for your home and have a professional install them if you don’t have the skill set to do it yourself.

After gutting the whole kitchen, start with the elements that make a kitchen. Countertops and cabinets should be installed first; after this is complete a fresh coat of paint or adding any backsplashes would be ideal. Best Time to Remodel your Kitchen

Sunday, July 25th, 2010 | Filed under: beautiful kitchen, kitchen remodeling

Remodeling your kitchen is an enormous undertaking that requires plenty of patience and planning. You will need to determine a new design that fits your style, tour showrooms, and meet with the designer. You have probably pored over innumerable remodeling magazines and researched your options online. However, you must take into account the best season for remodeling. Should you modify your house in the cooler months or during the warm, summer months?

Consider that modifications to your kitchen may require that you find alternative sources for food preparation. For this reason, summer is often the best time for remodeling your kitchen. Outdoor grilling is already a popular summer activity that offers a break from overheated kitchens and piles of dirty pots and pans. Why not take advantage of summer-time grilling and modernize your kitchen while cooking outdoors? Campfire cooking is another fun way to enjoy your time out of the kitchen and is particularly enjoyable for children. Kampgrounds of America (or KOA) offer an extensive list of recipes perfect for campfire cooking while you await the completion of your new contemporary kitchen.

Another benefit to warm month remodeling is the ability to open windows and let in the breeze. Paint fumes or the smell of wood stains can be overpowering. You will need to air out the room to provide appropriate ventilation. In addition to the strong odor, remodeling causes a build-up of dust, wood shavings, and other air-borne irritants. While opening windows in the winter months is still a possibility, it creates an unnecessary need to turn up the heater and increase your monthly heating costs, not to mention your carbon footprint.

Summertime is the perfect time to stay out of the kitchen. When autumn rolls around, you will have a new modern kitchen to appreciate and enjoy.
